Since 1999
Yoga is alive.
The national peak body for yoga.
Our reason for being
Visible to anyone curious to look
There is an old thread in the yogic literature that returns again and again, about the rare privilege of being born into a world where yoga can be accessed and learned. The texts call this miraculous, requiring a particular alignment of birth and place and time, and we are fortunate to have teachers living in our midst, and texts that have survived, and a society arranged in a way that leaves people time to read and to keep the company of fellow seekers.
Yoga exists, far-reaching in time and space, and among the most ancient bodies of knowledge, and it is perhaps for this very scale that it is among the most frequently reduced. The reductions take familiar shapes, yoga presented as fitness, or as symptom relief, or as a spiritual accessory to whichever culture happens to be passing through, and these are, by and by, to be expected. Brands and styles and techniques are usually how people find the threshold.
Yoga, an Ontological Perspective
The word yoga denotes both the state of nonduality and the collection of practices that help us reach it. This is the fuller account of what yoga is, traced back to its source, the philosophy that sits beneath the practice and the breadth the tradition holds.

Founded in 1999.
Yoga Australia was founded to bring the country’s yoga teachers under one banner and to give the public a way to recognise a properly trained one. For most of its life it ran as a member association, and last decade it made a deliberate change, becoming a Company Limited by Guarantee with a board of directors whose role is governance and oversight rather than the running of things.
The point of the change was longevity, so the organisation could outlast any one person and decide in the interest of the profession rather than whoever happened to be at the table.
Voluntary Registration and Positive Duty
Years ago Yoga Australia did a great deal of soul searching and arrived at the position that we recommend voluntary registration. Yoga works best when people come to it on their own terms, and the path through it is different for every person. On the positive duty to represent yoga in full.
