SUMMARY:Calm and Insight Retreat with Samaneri Jayasāra
DESCRIPTION:May all beings be deeply well and find peace within their own hearts \n\nViveka Hermitage \nThe cultivation of calm and tranquility\, mindfulness and wisdom are central to the path of awakening and liberation as taught by the Buddha. This 4-day retreat will offer foundational teachings on the Buddhist principles and practices of calm and insight. These will be incorporated throughout various guided meditation sessions (sitting\, walking and standing practices)\, Q&A sessions\, silent group sittings\, readings and reflections\, along with some relaxation sessions or yoga nidras. \nThe emphasis in this retreat will be more on direct practice rather than a study course on Buddhism. The teachings and practices will encourage participants to investigate and be with one’s mind; learning how to integrate these practices into daily life so as to bring more calm\, peacefulness\, and clarity. \nThis 4-day retreat will be held in noble silence with times for group Q & A and discussion. Participants will be encouraged to continue the practice principles after the end of the formal retreat schedule each day and will be provided with various resources to do so. \nAbout the teacher\nSamaneri Jayasara is a ten precept nun in the Theravadin Forest tradition (of Ajahn Chah and Ajahn Sumedho). She has studied and practised Buddhism and meditation in various capacities for over 35 years. She has a PhD and Master’s Degree in education\, focusing on comparative spiritual traditions\, Buddhism and psychotherapy. DESCRIPTION:Improve your memory and focus. –  Reduce mental agitation  –  Increase your breath capacity. –  Improve listening and communication skills –  Find and refine your own voice  –   Increase your self confidence. –  Strengthen you spiritual connection  –  Gain an overall sense of well-being!! \nVedic Chanting is yoga\, it is concentration\, meditation\, it is prāṇāyāma\, it is jñāna and it is bhakti. It is a commitment to learning something very deep. \nI am asked what the Vedas have to do with Yoga. Well\, the Vedas contain it\, the Vedas are themselves Yoga. That is what this is all about. \nThat said\, you don’t need anything to practice and learn. If you want to know something in you that will surprise you a lot\, this will surely interest you. It is not easy\, but it is enriching. It is not quick\, but it is one of the most beautiful things I have ever heard. \nChanting controls and transforms the Prāṇā\, it is a feeling of merging with the Universal vibration\, and it is rediscovering oneself anew in a practice very little known in the West. \nIn these classes you will learn how to pronounce Sanskrit\, you will learn the correct way to recite some Vedic mantras\, such as the popular Gāyatrī\, as it was taught in ancient times\, unchanged\, orally and following the rules of a South Indian lineage. \nYou don’t need to know how to sing\, or how to tune\,  in Vedic Chanting we only use 3 notes not 7 as in music \, this makes it accessible to everyone! \nChanting classes are conducted seated\, either on the floor or on a chair. It is important to feel comfortable so that you are able to focus only on the sound.  All chants will be taught through a “call and response” methodology\, using the aid of chant texts. The basic rules of Chanting\, along with general meanings of chants will be explained. \nThese classes are for you if you want to learn more about mantra practice. It is a commitment to learning something very deep. \nI am asked what the Vedas have to do with Yoga. Well\, the Vedas contain it\, the Vedas are themselves Yoga. That is what this is all about. \nThat said\, you don’t need anything to practice and learn. If you want to know something in you that will surprise you a lot\, this will surely interest you. It is not easy\, but it is enriching. It is not quick\, but it is one of the most beautiful things I have ever heard. \nChanting controls and transforms the Prāṇā\, it is a feeling of merging with the Universal vibration\, and it is rediscovering oneself anew in a practice very little known in the West. \nIn these classes you will learn how to pronounce Sanskrit\, you will learn the correct way to recite some Vedic mantras\, such as the popular Gāyatrī\, as it was taught in ancient times\, unchanged\, orally and following the rules of a South Indian lineage. \nYou don’t need to know how to sing\, or how to tune\,  in Vedic Chanting we only use 3 notes not 7 as in music \, this makes it accessible to everyone! \nChanting classes are conducted seated\, either on the floor or on a chair. It is important to feel comfortable so that you are able to focus only on the sound.  All chants will be taught through a “call and response” methodology\, using the aid of chant texts. The basic rules of Chanting\, along with general meanings of chants will be explained. \nThese classes are for you if you want to learn more about mantra practice. DESCRIPTION:Improve your memory and focus. –  Reduce mental agitation  –  Increase your breath capacity. –  Improve listening and communication skills –  Find and refine your own voice  –   Increase your self confidence. –  Strengthen you spiritual connection  –  Gain an overall sense of well-being!! \nVedic Chanting is yoga\, it is concentration\, meditation\, it is prāṇāyāma\, it is jñāna and it is bhakti. It is a commitment to learning something very deep. \nI am asked what the Vedas have to do with Yoga. Well\, the Vedas contain it\, the Vedas are themselves Yoga. That is what this is all about. \nThat said\, you don’t need anything to practice and learn. If you want to know something in you that will surprise you a lot\, this will surely interest you. It is not easy\, but it is enriching. It is not quick\, but it is one of the most beautiful things I have ever heard. \nChanting controls and transforms the Prāṇā\, it is a feeling of merging with the Universal vibration\, and it is rediscovering oneself anew in a practice very little known in the West. \nIn these classes you will learn how to pronounce Sanskrit\, you will learn the correct way to recite some Vedic mantras\, such as the popular Gāyatrī\, as it was taught in ancient times\, unchanged\, orally and following the rules of a South Indian lineage. \nYou don’t need to know how to sing\, or how to tune\,  in Vedic Chanting we only use 3 notes not 7 as in music \, this makes it accessible to everyone! \nChanting classes are conducted seated\, either on the floor or on a chair. It is important to feel comfortable so that you are able to focus only on the sound.  All chants will be taught through a “call and response” methodology\, using the aid of chant texts. The basic rules of Chanting\, along with general meanings of chants will be explained. \nThese classes are for you if you want to learn more about mantra practice. SUMMARY:The Value of True Compassion
DESCRIPTION:“One compassionate word\, action\, or thought can reduce another person’s suffering and bring him joy. One word can give comfort and confidence\, destroy doubt\, help someone avoid a mistake\, reconcile a conflict\, or open the door to liberation. One action can save a person’s life or help him take advantage of a rare opportunity. One thought can do the same\, because thoughts always lead to words and actions. With compassion in our heart\, every thought\, word\, and deed can bring about a miracle.” \n\nThich Nhat Hanh \nCompassion transcends mere sympathy and understanding; it is a state of being that embodies the witness consciousness\, recognising the inherent light within each being beyond their suffering. By acknowledging our own suffering and questioning its necessity\, we gain insight into the impermanence of all things and the dissolution of the ego. Suffering serves its purpose until we realise its futility. \nOn the spiritual plane\, compassion helps us see that attachment to past and future thoughts and emotions is the root of suffering. It embodies complete\, non-judgmental awareness without an agenda and can be powerfully transmitted through silence—the most profound form of elevating consciousness. True compassion is generously offered in its highest form: silence\, free from the constraints of mind-based communication. It forms a potent therapeutic relationship that elevates consciousness\, serving as a teaching conveyed not through words but through example. When we extend compassion to those who are suffering\, we are not descending into their pain but guiding them through our presence. Compassion is the most powerful tool for raising consciousness and fostering deep connections with others\, resonating from one heart to another in a meditative\, right-brain-to-right-brain way\, a process supported by research in neuroscience. Through compassion\, we transcend judgement\, embody presence\, and offer healing that is both subtle and profound\, elevating ourselves and others in the shared experience of our common humanity. \nJoin us to explore the value of true compassion on this heart opening and mind-expanding meditation retreat.
