Lesson 4: Postnatal Yoga Therapy

Working with SIJ, SPD, Carpal Tunnel & Diastasis Recti

During pregnancy and into the postpartum period a hormone called ‘relaxin’ is released in the body.

Relaxin softens and loosens the joints in the body, specifically, the joints in the pelvis and lower back region. This can cause instability in the pelvis and lower back, and even contribute to pain and instability in the wrist joints.

In this short video lecture Ana explains how the postnatal body can be impacted by SIJ (Sacroiliac joint dysfunction/ inflammation), SPD (Pubic Symphysis Disorder), and Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.

As a consequence, we need to focus on support and stability in our postnatal yoga practice, including using props/modifications for the wrists (as demonstrated in this video).

Notes on Diastasis Recti

Another important postnatal condition that we need to be aware of is Diastasis Recti—separation of the abdominal muscles.
