DESCRIPTION:The Awakened Heart in a Changing World Meditation Retreat \n\nwith Ali Barlow and Lisa Brown\n\n19th Sept to 25th Sept\, 2025 at Sangsurya Retreat Centre\, Byron Bay\n\nHow do we keep our hearts open in face of the suffering we see in the world?\n\nThis silent retreat will offer the opportunity to find freedom\, courage and presence in the midst of suffering\, and to cultivate a responsiveness to life.\n\nThe retreat offers a rich program of guided meditations\, meditation instruction\, sitting periods\, walking periods\, individual meetings with the teachers\, open dharma inquiry sessions\, and nourishing heart practices.  There will also be Dharma talks offered to cultivate an exploration into how the liberating wisdom teachings of the Buddha can help us to understand our experiences of the world and of ourselves.\n\nEach morning will begin with a gentle\, embodied ‘Heart Yoga’ yoga class. This mindful movement practice includes a half hour guided practice of Yoga Nidra to support deep relaxation.\n\nAs part of Sangsurya’s spring offering\, room rates for this retreat are lower than usual – making it a wonderful time to join us.\n\nTeachers:\n\n Ali Barlow – is a dedicated Insight Dharma teacher with decades of meditative practice and a strong foundation in the Buddha’s teachings. Based on Gumbaynggirr Country\, Lisa leads an Eco-Dharma Sangha in the Coffs Harbour region. Her teaching is grounded\, embodied\, and informed by our interconnectedness with all of life.\n\nHealth protocols: We follow all NSW Health guidelines on our retreats. Any necessary protocols will be advised prior to the retreat to insure safety for all.\n\nDetailed Retreat Information:\n\nPlease arrive between 3:00pm and 5:00 pm on Friday 19th Sept. The retreat will finish after lunch on Thursday\, 25th Sept.\n\nSchedule: The full days have an early optional exercise period e.g. yoga\, walking or individual exercise. The retreat program consists of sitting\, standing\, walking & guided meditation\, meditation instruction\, group and individual meetings with teachers\, inquiry sessions\, evening Dharma talks and daily mindfulness work periods.\n\nThe retreat is conducted in silence apart from meetings with teachers and essential communication.\n\nMeetings with the teachers are an essential aspect of the retreat and will be in a small group format.  Also there will be opportunity for individual interviews with teachers during the week.\n\nDana: Insight Meditation teachers give generously of their time and energy during retreats. They receive no payment for this and are supported by donations from those attending retreats.\n\nA Dana (donation) box will be placed inside the meditation hall for donations to support the teachers.\n\nWhat to Bring:\n\n Meditation cushions and mat\n\n\n Clothing plus meditation shawl or wrap\n\n\n Torch with extra batteries: Sangsurya is in a forest setting and even though there is path lighting\, a torch is handy for moving around the area at night.\n Water bottle (please leave outside the meditation hall): Filtered water is available at the meditation hall and in the dining room.\n\n\n Rain/sun protection:\n\n\n Other useful items: Mosquito repellent and sunscreen. If any student suspects that an insight teacher is slipping in ethical conduct\, they are asked to discuss this with the manager.\n\nThe Five Precepts for the retreat are to take up the practices of:\n\n 	 Cultivating kindness and restraining from harmful actions.\n Cultivating appreciation and generosity with possessions and restraining from taking what is not freely offered.\n Cultivating inner joy and contentment and restraining from sexual expression.\n Cultivating truthful and appropriate communication and restraining from speech that distorts or is damaging.\n Cultivating clarity and restraining from habits that create dullness or heedlessness.\n\nWe acknowledge that this retreat takes place on Arakwal Country and pay our respects to elders past\, present and emerging.\n\n\nThis information will be sent to all participants in a document form prior to the retreat.

SUMMARY:Cultivating Inner and Outer Peace - A Retreat for Activists and Changemakers
DESCRIPTION:Join mindfulness teachers and activists\, Lisa Brown\, Lody Levy and Suzie Brown\, for a 3-day mindfulness and nature retreat. \nAs activists and environmental change makers\, we are passionately committed to protecting the earth\, yet we must face up to the accelerating climate and ecological crises unfolding before us. \nMany complex and difficult emotions like fear\, anxiety\, grief and anger will naturally arise and this can lead to burn out\, an absence of joy and affect our health and relationships and ability to show up in the world. \nThis retreat will help you to learn new ways to prevent and manage burnout through mindfulness practices including silent reflection and meditation\, embodied movement\, immersing in nature and connecting with like-minded friends\, all in a beautiful rainforest setting. \nThese supportive skills and practices will help you to: \n\nDevelop better emotional resilience\nHave more energy and inspiration for our work\nReduce burnout\nFeel more supported and connected\n\nRobin Wall Kimmerer said “It is a radical act to reclaim your own attention and turn it to the natural world.” Reconnecting to nature is the portal to deep belonging\, which we all crave and reminds us of who we are and why we do this work \nOur venue will be the beautiful Springbrook Rainforest Retreat: https://tsretreat.org/ \nSCHOLARSHIPS \nIf you need financial support to be able to attend this retreat (ie you would not otherwise be able to afford to come)\, you are in luck! Due to the generosity of some philanthropic donors\, we are able to offer a limited number of scholarship places – we just ask that you apply by paying a $100 registration fee and then letting us know why you need the scholarship. You can find this option on the “Get Tickets” page. \nPRACTICAL INFORMATION \nThe retreat runs from Friday 1st November 5pm (dinner served at 6pm) until Monday 4th November 2pm (after lunch). \nThe retreat fee includes all meals and beverages plus accommodation in either a private room or camping – all with shared bathrooms. \nThe retreat fee does not include payment for the teachers. The teaching is provided by Lisa\, Lody & Suzie on a dana basis – the ancient Buddhist practice of dana – this means that we offer the teachings generously and ask for a monetary offering from you to the teachers according to your means. \nThe registration fee includes a $100 non-refundable deposit. If you need to cancel your booking\, you can do so up until 7 days before the retreat and we will issue you a refund minus the $100. \nARE YOU AN EXPERIENCED MEDITATOR? \nIf you have experience with silent retreats\, we invite you to stay on after this 3 day retreat for an additional 3 days where we will be doing silent sitting and walking meditation together and some sharing practices.
