Back on the Table: Private Health Insurance Benefits
Yoga Australia applauds the recommendation to reinstate yoga in private health insurance benefits. The Federal Government has accepted the recommendations of the Natural Therapies Review, announced by the former government following the exclusion of 16 natural therapies from private health insurance benefits in 2019.
Mental Health through the Yogic Lens
Who are you? According to Yoga, all our answers to this question are ultimately describing the mind. Whatever we might say about ourselves, what we see in the world and what we think about the world is only what our minds are telling us. For the vast majority, unless steps are taken to quieten the mind, we never see the world as it is – only as it is shown to us by our own mind.
The Credibility of Yoga as Evidence
This statement presents the evidence supporting yoga as a credible health intervention within Australia’s healthcare system. Drawing from the National Health and Medical Research Council Natural Therapies Review published in 2024, along with contemporary clinical research, we demonstrate yoga’s measurable benefits and advocate for its continued integration into mainstream healthcare.

What is yoga?
With its roots firmly grounded in ancient eastern teachings, Yoga is recognised as a traditional system of wisdom, principles and practices derived from the Vedic teachings of India.
Yoga takes a holistic approach to the integrated and innate wisdom of the human mind-body connection, with modern science nowadays beginning to uncover and fortify these ancient teachings and the many benefits this practice holds for your biological, psychological and sociological well-being.
Ultimately, yoga is a tool that may be used for self-discovery, stress-management, physical health & fitness, and mental & emotional wellbeing.
Yoga Australia is the peak national body for registration and representation of Yoga professionals from all traditions and styles of yoga, independent from any one lineage or training provider.
As the peak body for yoga in Australia, we actively advocate for positive change and improvement within the profession. This includes engaging with government and the health industry, lobbying for better pay and conditions for yoga teachers, promoting a broader understanding of yoga’s benefits for health and well-being, conducting industry forums, and collaborating with stakeholders both within and outside the yoga community.

What we do
Acknowledging Country, First Nation Culture and Community
We recognise the continuous and deep connection to country of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples as the first peoples of this nation.
We pay respects to elders past and present, and recognise the strength and resilience of all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Here on land that was never ceded, we recognise the past and ongoing injustices resulting from displacement and dispossession experienced by the broader Aboriginal community on the continent now known as Australia.
It is a privilege to be teaching on Country and we hope that our work here in some way supports true custodianship of this land.
