Back on the Table: Private Health Insurance Benefits
Yoga Australia applauds the recommendation to reinstate yoga in private health insurance benefits. The Federal Government has accepted the recommendations of the Natural Therapies Review, announced by the former government following the exclusion of 16 natural therapies from private health insurance benefits in 2019.
State of Yoga 2025
The stellar growth of yoga in Australia throughout the 2000s and 2010s peaked with the onset of the pandemic. Covid and the years following shook the industry as yoga is predominantly an indoor group activity, and many studios closed during this period. A large-scale public embrace of online meeting and video streaming technology was something of a silver lining, with some heartwarming stories of people in rural areas or with certain health conditions suddenly having access to yoga.
Adhikārī – Rethinking Readiness in Modern Yoga
In contemporary culture, we often hear the phrase: “When the student is ready, the teacher will appear.” But what does it really mean to be ready? In the classical traditions of Yoga and Vedānta, this readiness was not left to chance. It was framed by the concept of adhikārī – the qualified student. A person’s readiness determined what teaching they could receive, how it should be transmitted, and the pace at which they could progress.

What is yoga?
With its roots firmly grounded in ancient eastern teachings, Yoga is recognised as a traditional system of wisdom, principles and practices derived from the Vedic teachings of India.
Yoga takes a holistic approach to the integrated and innate wisdom of the human mind-body connection, with modern science nowadays beginning to uncover and fortify these ancient teachings and the many benefits this practice holds for your biological, psychological and sociological well-being.
Ultimately, yoga is a tool that may be used for self-discovery, stress-management, physical health & fitness, and mental & emotional wellbeing.
Yoga Australia is the peak national body for registration and representation of Yoga professionals from all traditions and styles of yoga, independent from any one lineage or training provider.
As the peak body for yoga in Australia, we actively advocate for positive change and improvement within the profession. This includes engaging with government and the health industry, lobbying for better pay and conditions for yoga teachers, promoting a broader understanding of yoga’s benefits for health and well-being, conducting industry forums, and collaborating with stakeholders both within and outside the yoga community.

What we do
Acknowledging Country, First Nation Culture and Community
We recognise the continuous and deep connection to country of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples as the first peoples of this nation.
We pay respects to elders past and present, and recognise the strength and resilience of all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Here on land that was never ceded, we recognise the past and ongoing injustices resulting from displacement and dispossession experienced by the broader Aboriginal community on the continent now known as Australia.
It is a privilege to be teaching on Country and we hope that our work here in some way supports true custodianship of this land.
