Spotlight: Dorothy Rees

Dorothy Rees turns 99 in July 2024

She began her Yoga journey almost 50 years ago.

Dot was always interested in fitness and had been involved in calisthenics which was popular in the 1960’s.

In the late 1960s Swami Sarasvati had a yoga programme on television which captured Dot’s interest. At the time she was a mother of 4 small children and living in a small rural town in north central Victoria. Despite this, she managed to make her way to several Yoga camps held by Swami in Frankston.

Some people in the town were mystified by this new exotic yoga group and thought it maybe some sort of cult!

From there she became a practicing yoga teacher and joined the IYTA as well. She soon had a number of local ladies involved in her classes.

The group thrived!

As the years passed, Dorothy moved onto other exercise disciplines such as aerobics in the 80’s and even boot scotting at one stage. Dot always maintained her interest in Yoga and continued to practice it into her 80’s. As a 98-year-old she still tries to maintain her fitness and wellbeing, albeit at a slower pace.
