Official Yoga Australia Event: How to Teach Yoga to Beginners

June 8 @ 12:00 PM 3:00 PM AEST

Melbourne Yoga Teachers are invited to learn “How to Teach Beginners Yoga” at this In Person workshop, presented by Yoga Australia.

About the Event

Teaching beginners Yoga is both a skill and an art.

Any Yoga Teacher will come across beginner students in their vocation. Often, as a new teacher we start our career teaching beginners.

Should you put them at the back of the class and tell them to follow?
Or should we (as teachers) develop our knowledge to teach them correctly and safely, so they actually learn how to practice yoga?

Teaching beginners is challenging because they have not acquired any knowledge OR their perception of yoga is limited to what they have been seen; via social media for example. As teachers, we need to remember what is actually like to be a newbie, each student attending a class for the first time will have their own expectations, assumptions or past experiences to take into consideration.

Join Jacqueline Brumley & Shimon Tchobutaru (Registered Senior & Level 2 Yoga Australia teachers) on this unique workshop where you will be guided on how and what to teach beginners.

The 3-hour workshop is both practical and theory based.

Agenda:

  • Welcome & Introductions– with talk on the topic of “how the teach beginners”.
  • Handout on the Yoga asanas and basic practices beginners should learn to build a sound foundation in learning Yoga.
  • Sequencing the practices so beginners learn systematically.
  • How to teach beginners about body awareness.
  • Teaching 2 mock classes: 1. where everyone is a beginner and 2. Where there are beginners in an on-going class.
  • How to teach with clear, concise information and not overload beginners with too much information. Teach with “bite size information”.
  • Teaching beginners the full Yogic breath.
  • Basic relaxation techniques.
  • Q & A.
