About The Ocean of Yoga Book
Immerse yourself in the timeless practice of yoga with this essential and accessible guide. With a commitment to honoring rather than modifying the tradition of yoga, Amy Landry unveils the vast ocean of yoga – from its rich history, texts, and traditions to the core principles and practice.
Explore: The history and evolution of yoga; Facets of subtle yogic anatomy, including prana, koshas, nadis, kundalini, chakras, vayu, and a map of the mind; Teachings on traditional movements, purification practices, mudra, meditation, mantra, and approaching yoga through an ayurvedic lens; Diverse paths, including Bhakti, Karma, Jnana, Raja, Hatha, Laya, Kriya, and Tantra; Living (and teaching) yoga through stewardship and lineage; Foundational texts including the Bhagavad Gita, Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras, and beyond; The sanctity of Sanskrit; and much more.
A Pivotal Foundation
Session One | Friday 8 May | 11.30am – 12:30pm AEST
Reflecting on an overview of the timeline of yoga, we’ll review the influences and culture of the Indian subcontinent that specifically shaped the development of yoga over thousands of years.
Cultivating respect and reverence for the context of yoga, this first session presents critical considerations that provide any practitioner with a grounding in the historical framework and cultural context for their experience of yoga.
Into the Subtle Self
Session Two | Friday 15 May | 11.30am – 12:30pm AEST
Together, we will consider the intrinsic approach to the human body through the yogic worldview. It is with knowledge of subtle yogic anatomy that we can further perceive the value of techniques that attempt to penetrate the layers of the self.
Concepts often glossed over, we will place emphasis on the value of integration of the subtle realm of the human vessel. Importantly, we will further clear up confusion around teachings that have been considerably modified through the Western lens.
Rememberance & Walking Our Talk
Session Three | Friday 22 May | 11.30am – 12:30pm AEST
With many philosophical systems, styles of postural yoga, cultural customs, and also fluid frameworks that guide the various stages of life, it can feel overwhelming to know how best to move forward with yogic pursuits.
In this session, we will explore how yoga is understood and integrated as a path to be lived, rather than a mere set of isolated practices. We will touch on lineage, stewardship, and our dharmic duty.
An Inner Orientation
Session Four | Friday 29 May | 11.30am – 12:30pm AEST
In this call, we will look at some key yogic techniques that may form the basis of one’s individual sadhana, and how applying these progressive, practical elements along one’s path works when applied in a cumulative way. Together, we will explore the methodology, beyond the well-known eight limbs of Patanjali yoga, that systematically takes us inward.
Illuminating the Language of Yoga
Session Five | Friday 5 June | 11.30am – 12:30pm AEST
In our final session, closing with great reverence, we will touch on the beauty (and sanctity) of Sanskrit, sacred sound, and the incredibly pertinent texts that literally and metaphorically offer us the timeless wisdom of yoga – including and beyond the most commonplace shastra.
