Biography
| Bio | Tanaya is an accredited Yoga Therapist, Senior Yoga Teacher, Ayurvedic Lifestyle Coach, and Author. Her work is centred around the mind-body connection and the psyche’s key role in illness, wellness, and the healing process. With experience spanning over three decades in mind-body research and practice, at the heart of Tanaya’s philosophy is the belief that yoga offers a transformative path accessible to all, regardless of physical capacity, age, or belief system. Drawing from a rich foundation in both Eastern and Western disciplines, Tanaya holds a Bachelor of Dramatic Arts from the Victorian College of the Arts and Victoria University of Technology, where she majored in Performance Studies, Human Movement, Psychoanalysis and Phenomenology. During this formative training in the 90’s, she began exploring the body’s capacity to express—and supress—its truth, and the ways in which prose, movement, and sound can intersect with Yoga as pathways to healing. This inquiry continues to inform her work, which integrates Yoga’s ancient methodologies within the realities of the modern world. Tanaya has studied with a wide range of esteemed teachers across diverse traditions, including the Krishnamacharya and Kriya Yoga lineages. She brings over 10,000 hours of teaching experience, supported by extensive training in Yoga, Yoga Chikitsa (Yoga Therapy), Ayurveda, health, fitness, and personal training. Alongside her formal qualifications, she has devoted herself to ongoing study and mentorship in Yoga across India, Spain, Indonesia, the UK, and Australia. Her teachers include Vijay Amar, Nayaswami Savitri, Sal Flynn, Trish David, Caroline Robertson, Bernie Clarke, and many others, each contributing to the depth and breadth of her approach. Many of her most influential teachers she has never met in person, yet their wisdom—shared through books and lectures—has quietly shaped her path.
Guided by Taoist, Buddhist, and Yogic philosophies, Tanaya continues to refine her work through ongoing study, with particular inspiration drawn from the Kriya Yoga tradition. She holds deep reverence for the teachings passed down by Swami Kriyananda, Paramahamsa Hariharananda, Paramahamsa Prajnanananda, Asha Nayaswami, Nischala Joy Devi, Dr. Vasant Lad, Dr. Ananda Balayogi Bhavanani, Mantak Chia, Lee Holden, and Ajahn Brahm, whose work continues to shape her understanding of Yoga, Buddhism, Taoism, and other Eastern wisdom traditions as complementary pathways to healing and self-realisation. Motivated by the increasing need for holistic healthcare that addresses root causes rather than symptoms, Tanaya is dedicated to expanding the accessibility and recognition of Yoga Therapy in Australia and beyond. She is a leading advocate for its role as a complementary and effective support for mental health conditions, trauma recovery, addiction, and complex mind-body imbalances, and continues to contribute to the evolution of Yoga Therapy as a respected therapeutic discipline. Tanaya works with individuals and groups both in-person and online. She is the creator of several live and online workshops, trainings, events, and publications including:
When she’s not on the yoga mat, Tanaya is a registered civil celebrant and, above all, a mum—and lifelong student. She divides her time between Perth and Denmark in Western Australia, where she lives with her favourite humans and her furry companions—Florence the Dalmatian and Turbo, the rescue cat. |
