The Hyper Mobile Yogi: Teaching Internationally

If you have ever imagined yourself teaching in India, Greece, or London, you’re in good company. Yoga is a global practice, and qualified Australian teachers are welcomed in studios and retreats all over the world. The path to getting there is less mysterious than it might seem.

Getting hired abroad

The process of finding work overseas is often similar to your local experience. You may need to apply, audition, or practise in a studio for a while before being offered classes. Employers will look at your styles and lineage, any specialities such as prenatal or yin, and the usual factors that influence any job, right through to visa and tax status. A strong CV tailored for the yoga industry that shows upskilling and CPD is vital, and Yoga Australia members are already on the express path with loads of free and affordable resources to assist.

The association question

Yoga is unregulated in most countries, which can make the landscape of associations, alliances, and federations feel confusing. Do you need to join a local body in every country where you want to teach? In most cases, no, you don’t. More important than the name on an association’s letterhead is the credibility and rigour of the standards it promotes.

Since 1999, Yoga Australia has maintained training and practice standards among the highest in the world. Our registered teachers routinely go on to work in a multitude of capacities across many countries. When we are contacted by insurers and employers, they are consistently reassured by the depth of our processes. Yoga Australia membership is an international credential, a high water-mark of quality.

Insurance and international credibility

Insurance companies effectively set the minimum credible threshold for yoga teachers in each country, and membership with a respected association is either compulsory or looked upon favourably wherever you go. Simone from GSA says “registered members of a reputable association can often access enhanced coverage and more competitive premiums through affiliated insurer arrangements.”

Your registration with Yoga Australia positions you strongly, whether you are teaching in Sydney or Singapore. If you are considering a move abroad or an international teaching stint, have a conversation with us or GSA early to understand how your cover extends. Their team can walk you through the specifics, and they are only a phone call or quote request away.
