Nova on Staying Yoga-Centric

Nova found yoga in her twenties, and that love alongside a love of business led her to open Warrior One Yoga in 2015. Warrior One began as a small, humble studio on New Street in Brighton, and grew one studio and one community at a time into three locations across Melbourne. Brighton turned eleven this year, Mordialloc turned eight, and Mornington on the peninsula just turned five, and Chi Chi the studio mascot has been on the mat for most of it, fairly devoted to Shavasana.

Building Warrior One has been rewarding and at times challenging, and Nova ended up wearing every hat on offer in those first few years, and she points to the irony of a yoga business owner running into burnout in that period. She speaks warmly of the business partners who helped her grow through that stretch and of a teaching team who built the brand alongside her, and she has now arrived at running Warrior One as a solopreneur.

Personal stories from students about how the practice has shifted or changed them bring her into the studio on the hard days, and the same dynamic shows up across the retreats and the teacher trainings. COVID closed the three physical studios for 365 days and pushed everything online, and the online community that grew in that period has stayed. She speaks of business as constant iteration and the willingness to make errors and keep improving.

The wider movement industry has tilted hard into Pilates and adjacent modalities, and Nova has chosen to keep Warrior One yoga-centric and yoga-focused across all three studios. She speaks plainly about the next chapter, which involves more Shavasana, more classes, more community, more retreats, more teacher trainings, and as she puts it, just a lot more yoga.
