150 hour Hills Yoga Mentor-Apprenticeship Program

Description

Program Description

This mentoring-based teacher training offers a highly personalised and immersive approach to yoga education. Unlike larger, classroom-style trainings that primarily focus on information delivery and peer practice, this program places emphasis on experiential learning, direct participation, guided reflection, and substantial teaching experience within a real class environment.

Limited to a small number of trainees each year, participants work closely and consistently with their mentor through weekly contact, receiving individualised support, constructive feedback, and opportunities for progressive skill development.

The program supports trainees to cultivate a strong personal practice, refine their understanding of technique and alignment, and develop the practical skills required to teach yoga safely, confidently, and professionally.

The 150 hour membership upgrade pathway is designed to advance students who have already completed their 200 hour teacher training so they can upgrade from Yoga Australia’s Provisional Membership to a Level 1 Registered Teacher. The program is best completed over a minimum of six months and is best suited to individuals who are self-motivated, capable of independent study and research, organised in their approach, committed to their development, and possess an inquisitive and reflective mind.

Training components include:

Weekly Mentored Learning and Teaching Experience

  • Attendance at weekly classes throughout the duration of the program.
  • Classes attended for the trainee’s own ongoing practice and development.
  • Observation of classes taught by the mentor, including note-taking and discussion.
  • Dedicated teacher development sessions focused on the practical application of teaching skills.
  • Progressive hands-on teaching experience within real class settings, moving through stages of observation to independent teaching.
  • Regular opportunities for feedback, discussion, and clarification of teaching principles tailored to the trainee’s individual learning needs.

Monthly Private Mentoring Sessions

  • review and discuss observations and notes;
  • 54 asanas, variations, modifications, and appropriate alternatives;
  • review written/practical assignments and learning progress;
  • develop teaching skills and communication skills;
  • receive individual feedback and guidance;
  • investigate specialised topics, including restorative yoga, rope work, the effective use of props, and adapting practices for diverse needs.

Directed Independent Study

Participants undertake self-paced learning through prescribed reading, real-time online education, research activities, and reflective study tasks designed to deepen understanding and support practical application.

Practicum

A substantial practicum component enables trainees to integrate theoretical knowledge with practical teaching experience in authentic learning environments.

Ongoing Mentorship

Graduates are encouraged to continue developing their teaching through ongoing professional development. Where a graduate is offered a teaching position at Hills Yoga, the Mentor will remain available to provide ongoing support and guidance as needed.

All required online components and Yoga Australia requirements must be completed by the end of the program to be eligible for certification.
