Nervous System Health: Increase Oxygen While Lowering Heart Rate

Good circulation is a paramount state of good health. To really get supreme health, we want to keep the blood circulating. While the heart rate can stay very low, as much as possible you don’t want your heart rate to go up too often. It’s good if it varies, maybe from 45 beats to 75 beats up and down every minute; a healthy heart should do that. It’s called good heart rate variability. But the idea that you should get your heart rate up to 120 or 160 beats 45 minutes three times a week, is outdated.

The yogi has been said to count their life, not by the number of years they live, but by the number of beats their heart makes and the number of breaths they take. So let’s consider therefore that the aim is not to get your heart rate up, but rather to get the blood vessels, the vascular system to work very effectively at moving blood through the body without the heart racing.

I want you to feel that you’re getting strong while focusing on being relaxed and not feeling tense. Whenever the body feels tension, it retards blood flow and increases the stress response which depletes your immune system. I want you to enhance blood flow, get good circulation with the heart rate low. I want you to get energy in your body without having to breathe so much.

    Prenatal Yoga

Learn how to support pregnant women to reclaim feminine empowerment, trust in themselves and find the confidence to birth joyfully. Includes a PDF copy of Katie's book, The Yoga of Birth.

"Namaste friends, thank you for being here and for opening your mind up to the possibilities of the beauty, joy and health benefits that a pregnancy and birth informed by yogic philosophy and practice could bring. It is my hope that in this book you will find much encouragement and many ideas for supporting yourself and your child on the journey into life. This is not a book offering detail about the physical yoga poses or asana, there are plenty of other good books that do that. Rather in this book I hope to draw from the ancient wisdom teachings specific to the lineages of yoga. My aim is to offer the powerful philosophies of the yogic disciplines and apply them to the journey into motherhood."

    Sequencing for the Vayus

Learn how to sequence for the vayus to create targeted classes that can cater specifically to students’ individual needs.

The vayus - as subdoshas of vata – are best understood as movements of energy within the body that govern a range of physical, mental and emotional functions (e.g. the digestion of food and assimilation of life experiences, the ability to eliminate waste from the body and let go of old patterns of behaviour and thought etc).

The healthy functioning of the vayus can be influenced using asana practices (inclusive of techniques such as bandha, pranayama and meditation) to target individual vayus and influence the physical, mental and emotional functions they govern.

    Spinal Integrity in Yoga

In yoga, we know that a healthy spine supports a healthy mind because of the direct correlation between the primary nadi (Sushumna), the physical spine, and one’s emotional wellbeing. However, during practice many students may compromise their spine by either trying to muscle (drag) or passively collapse (drop) their body into unhealthy positions and depths that have little or no relationship with their spinal integrity.

In this course we'll explore simple and effective ways you can support your students in developing spinal awareness and integrity for a safer, more sustainable practice and improved wellbeing.
